Grand Marais, Minnesota
A three-day retreat designed to explore low impact living and sustainable design with Minnesota native, Lonnie Dupre, Founder of North House Folk School and Builder Mark Hansen and Climate Change leaders from MN350. Building Minimalism is about much more than just living in a compact, space-utilizing home. It represents a shift toward an ecologically conscious, minimalist lifestyle where people consume only what they need. It is an emphasis on experiences, rather than material goods. As it turns out, making small adjustments to the way we live and the spaces we inhabit can lead to significant progress in combatting climate change.
Join us for a couple days at North House Folk School for presentations around climate change, ecologically conscious building strategies and foundations, a site visit to finished tiny cabins in Cook County, locally sourced meals and several community gatherings along the harbor.

Lonnie is a Midwest native raised on a country farm in Minnesota. He currently lives in Grand Marais, Minnesota where much of his time is spent backcountry in the Wilderness of the Minnesota/Canadian border area when he’s not on his further more long term explorations. Lonnie’s lifestyle in Grand Marais reflects his life’s work as an arctic explorer with a personal philosophy of living simply. Rooted in exploration and the protection of our planet, Lonnie has brought purpose into the design of his North Shore cabins. By marrying his life’s work as an Arctic explorer and carpenter, he has a profound reverence for the natural world and has invested his energy in living in harmony with it.
• Dupre completed the first west to east, 3,000 mile winter crossing of Canada’s famed Northwest Passage by dog team.
• Achieved the first circumnavigation of Greenland, a 6,500 mile, all non-motorized journey by kayak and dog team.
• Lonnie has pulled sleds on skis from Canada to the North Pole twice. The 2006 expedition reached over 68 million people worldwide on issues surrounding climate change.

Mökki Cabin Rentals
Lonnie’s properties serve as an inspiration for all—weather you’re a potential do-it-yourself home builder, an experienced contractor or a minimalist looking to travel on mission, a stay will provide you with perspective as you settle into your surroundings.
The log homes are constructed using pine timbers from foundation to roof and are painted in Scandinavian style in an effort to put a smile on your face. Lonnie says, “color makes people happy and we all want to feel happy”. The cabins are complete with books that share in his love of exploration and land preservation. Stones from Superiors shore line shelves and windowsills and serve as an element to bring you closer into the North Shores ecosystem.
